Celebrated British chef and food activist Jamie Oliver announced his 2010 TED Prize “wish to change the world” earlier this afternoon on the first day of the annual TED conference.

Stop Ignoring The Basic Rules for Preventing Heart Attacks

THURSDAY, Dec. 17 (HealthDay News) — While physicians and surgeons are getting better at treating heart attacks and other cardiovascular problems, too many Americans are ignoring the basic rules for preventing them, according to new statistics from the American Heart Association.

Topping the list: too little exercise, too much weight.

Weight-Loss Proves Effective Cure for Sleep Apnea

ScienceDaily (Dec. 7, 2009)— For obese men, a dramatic weight loss can be an effective way to improve moderate to severe sleep apnoea, scientists at Karolinska Institutet report. Those with severe sleep apnoea when the study began benefited most from weight loss.

“Our findings suggest that weight loss may be an effective treatment strategy for sleep apnoea in obese men,” says Kari Johansson, one of the researchers involved in the study. Read the Science Daily article.

Is fast food making your kids fat?

Over 12 ½ million U.S. children are already overweight. It’s long been assumed that living near fast food restaurant contributes to childhood obesity. Recent research now questions that theory.

Science Daily Article: Local Food Environments Can Lead To Obesity

Living in an area with more fast food outlets and convenience stores than supermarkets and grocers has been associated with obesity in a Canadian study. Researchers have shown that your local food environment can affect your weight.

John Spence from the University of Alberta, Canada, worked with a team of researchers to study associations between the ‘Retail Food Environment Index’ (RFEI) and levels of obesity. He said, “The RFEI is based upon a ratio of the number of fast-food restaurants and convenience stores to supermarkets and specialty food stores in a given radius around a person’s house. We’ve shown that it correlates very well with the odds that that person may be obese”…Read the article
